I love this author. This is the sixth book that I have read so far. I give the book 4 stars. I would recommend this book. This story spans around 70 years and 3 generations of DeFord women. All families has secrets.
The story starts in Arkansas, with 10 year old Hazel and 3 year old Maggie. They are having a tea party. Maggie accidently drops some of it and it breaks. Hazel yells at Maggie about breaking it, and she starts crying. While Hazel is picking blackberries, for a cobbler for supper, Maggie came up missing. Hazel's dad turned to alcohol. Hazel never told her daughter and grandaughter about what happened with Maggie. Hazel's daughter is Diane. Diane's daughter is Meghan.
Meghan, is a cold case detective. She had to leave work to recover from an accident. She goes to spend the time with Hazel. She does not know her mother is coming. They will be all together at one time. Hazel's secret about Maggie comes out. Meghan wants to solve the mystery of what happened to Maggie.
Diane's mother Hazel, was so protective. Detective Meghan and Detective Eagle joined forces to solve the disappearance of Maggie DeFord. They go to see Elaine Burton Durdan. Elaine and her husband Nolan could not have any children themselves. Elaine's parents ran the orphanage. Elaine's mother Nora was kidnapping children. Nora was sneaking the kids out and this was not noticed. While Meghan was investigating, her mom Diane was sitting with her grandmother while she has surgery. After surgery Hazel fell into a coma. I am not going to give away the ending. I really wasn't expecting it.
